Santa Cruz of Tenerife, May 2014.- Jorge Peñate Batista, second chef of the restaurant Las Aguas, of the Gran Hotel Bahía del Duque Resort (www.bahia-duque.com) has claimed victory in the 10th Edition of The Canary Islands Chefs Absolute Regional Championship, held yesterday in the Recinto Ferial de Tenerife, during the event Gastronomica 2014.
Jorge Peñate presented as his first dish of the championship “Potato tasting over a broth of its own skin with lightly braised rabbit" followed by “Pork loin with textured pumpkin, grilled banana and palm honey syrup”. Dishes with which he received the highest score from the jury, which unanimously declared him the winner, beating Alberto González Margallo, from the restaurant Clavijo 38 and Eduardo Domínguez de León, from the Hotel Villa Cortés, who took second and third place respectively. The award ceremony was chaired by the Insular Counsellor of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, José Joaquín Bethencourt.
At 30, Jorge Peñate Batista, a native of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, has been a chef at the Gran Hotel Bahía del Duque for 14 years. He is currently the sous-chef of the Restaurant Las Aguas, directed by Braulio Simancas, who, coincidentally also won this prestigious award in 2004.
